My teenager has zero interest in any high-protein menu that doesn’t include a side of cow. Thus the reason it was especially ludicrous of me to serve lentils and vegan sausage for dinner on Sunday night. Yeah, I did that.
But here’s the thing, after wondering why I often felt hungry, I did a two-week audit of my diet, and discovered a need to seriously up my protein game. And since I no longer have the metabolism of a 16-year-old, I made some small adjustments (read: fish, beans, soy, NOT cow) that made a huge difference in how I feel.
Jokes aside, managers also need to regularly assess what will help their team stay healthy and engaged. To get you started, here are three questions that are particularly relevant right now:
- Do I know how much vacation time my team has taken in the past six months? If you don’t know the answer, find out. If you discover that your team hasn’t taken any (or much) time off, have some conversations and get that fixed. It’s a win for personal well-being and your organization’s bottom-line.
- Do I frequently ask the same person to take on new projects? It’s great to have a reliable “go-to” person”, but don’t lose sight of how much time they are spending on work that falls outside their job description and their sweet spot. When work is aligned with one’s strengths and interests, people are far less likely to burn out. Do a quick audit of how you are doling out projects and see if you need to make some adjustments.
- Are there performance issues on my team that I’ve avoided addressing? It’s great if you are one of the many leaders who has demonstrated sensitivity and flexibility this past year as your team faced innumerable challenges. However, performance issues exist and they won’t disappear if left unaddressed. If there is a problem that needs attention, get on it. You may believe you are doing your employee a favor by withholding feedback right now, but most people want to know if they need to course-correct or change behaviors. Remember, if delivered well, feedback is a gift to everyone involved.
